August Gem of the Month:  Diamonds

Possibly no other gemstone is as famous as the diamond. Slogans and songs pay tribute to them, special occasions are centered around them and history is resplendent with tales and myths about them.

Colorful fables described diamonds as splinters of stars fallen to the earth and forming a resplendent diamond carpet.   These valleys of diamonds were protected by birds of prey from the air and poisonous snakes on the ground.

Diamonds have always invoked romance and love.  Cupid’s arrows were described as being tipped with diamonds, which produced magical love.

When in 1477, the Archduke Maximilian of Austria gave a diamond ring to Mary of Burgundy, a tradition was born.

Though diamonds were discovered some 3000 years ago in India, colored diamonds did not gain popularity until recently.  Colorless (white) diamonds are formed when carbon molecules up to 150 kilometers deep in the earth’s mantle are subjected to intense heat and pressure. Amazingly, most diamonds spent approximately 3.2billion years in that mantle before molten lava brought them to the earth’s surface!Natural colored diamonds are formed in the same manner but they contain additional elements. For example, the yellow diamond had nitrogen present during the heat and pressurization; the blue diamonds had boron present when reacting with the carbon molecules and violet is associated with hydrogen.Though there is no scientific consensus for the cause of the pink red, and champagne diamond, it is thought to be due to a shift or distortion in the crystal lattice structure.  The green diamond is caused by exposure to radiation in the host rock.

The most infrequently occurring colored diamond is the orange.  In order to be classified as orange, there must be no brown present.  The cause of this coloration is unknown.

Natural colored diamonds are far more rare than colorless diamonds and therefore, more expensive. Enhanced colored diamonds offer a more affordable alternative and are quite attractive, but the enhancement must always be disclosed.

We have used both natural colored diamonds and enhanced diamonds in our “Say It With Diamonds” collection.  These stunning, unique designs showcase the magnificent diamond and allow this gemstone to live up to its well- deserved reputation.
